Description:
Marine turtles are air-breathing reptiles that have become highly adapted for life in the sea. Powerful flipper-like limbs and a streamlined body make it possible for these gentle creatures to swim rapidly through the water. Man is the turtles' greatest enemy and serious declines have occurred in most populations around the world because of exploitation for meat, shell and soup stock. Although strict laws have been enacted to prevent their capture, The Hawaiian Hawksbill Turtle population is still decreasing and remains on the endangered species list.
